Proteus Crew is not a safety device
You are about to use Proteus Crew, a sailing crew scheduling tool. Before you do, please read this short notice and confirm you understand it.
Proteus Crew helps a skipper see who has said they will be on the boat for each race in a season. When you tap In, Maybe, or Out, you are telling your skipper your availability for that event. Nothing more.
What Proteus Crew does NOT do
Proteus Crew does not provide and is not designed to provide any of the following:
- Navigation, charts, GPS, or routing
- Weather forecasts, wind data, sea-state data, or storm warnings
- Tactical advice, race-course information, or starting-line guidance
- Crew-role or position assignments
- Any health, readiness, or condition-related assessments of crew
- Emergency notification, distress signaling, or location reporting
- Any other operational, safety, or decision-making guidance for sailing
If you need any of those things, use the appropriate dedicated equipment, official sources, or qualified professionals.
Decisions about sailing are made by your skipper
Whether the boat goes out, where it goes, how it is rigged, who is aboard, and whether conditions are safe, all of those decisions are made by the skipper using the Racing Rules of Sailing, COLREGS, United States Coast Guard regulations, and the skipper's own judgment and experience.
Your safety on the water depends on the boat, the crew, the equipment, the conditions, and the skipper's decisions, not on any app, and certainly not on Proteus Crew.
In an emergency
- VHF Channel 16 for marine emergencies (preferred at sea)
- Dial 911 where cellular coverage exists
- Use your boat's installed safety equipment (EPIRB, PLB, flares, life raft, etc.)
- Follow the safety procedures your skipper has briefed you on
Do not rely on Proteus Crew, on a push notification from Proteus Crew, on email reminders from Proteus Crew, or on any other Proteus Crew feature in an emergency.
Your responsibility
By using Proteus Crew, you confirm:
- You understand Proteus Crew is a scheduling tool only, not a safety, navigation, or operational tool of any kind.
- You will not use Proteus Crew as your sole source of information for any safety-critical decision.
- You remain solely responsible for your own decisions about whether to be aboard a boat for any event.
- You will follow the directions of your skipper and the relevant racing and maritime authorities while sailing.
Reminders, if you opt in
Proteus Crew can send you reminders about upcoming races by email or web push, if you choose. These reminders are a courtesy. They:
- May not arrive (network issues, mail provider classification, device settings)
- May arrive late
- Are not a substitute for confirming your participation directly with your skipper before race day
- Do not constitute notice of any change to race timing, location, or conditions, only the race organizing authority can provide that
If a reminder doesn't arrive, that does not mean a race is cancelled or that you are no longer expected. When in doubt, contact your skipper directly.
Acceptance
By tapping Accept in the app, you confirm you have read and understood this notice and agree to use Proteus Crew accordingly.
This acceptance is recorded with the version number above, a timestamp, and the user agent string of the device you're using, as described in our Privacy Policy.
If a material change is made to this notice, you will be asked to re-accept on your next session.
